I'm running Win7 Pro 64-bit.Icons on my taskbar to the left of the notification area no longer show up. Thanks, Kemical and Neemobeer. Neemobeer - I rebuilt the db files properly, making sure explorer.exe was not running.Kemical - I've had trouble with built-in windows utilities in the past (they often end up changing my settings) and think the simplest thing to do is overwrite the messed up files with a recent backup made before this problem started. Can I just replace the c:/windows folder?
I'm guessing all files and registry settings affecting the taskbar are in in that folder but want to check. Just to verify, do the shortcuts work and the icons are just missing or are the shortcuts broken as well?If you add a new pinned icon does it work?Additional Info about the taskbar.Icons cachedC:UsersAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsExplorerPinned shortcut LNK filesC:UsersAppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchC:UsersAppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedPinned Shortcut MappingRegistryHKEYCURRENTUSERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerTaskbandValue Name: FavoritesValue Type REGBINATYIf the mappings are screwed up you may not see icons. Thanks so much for your help. Here's the information you asked for.The shortcuts work but the icons on the taskbar to the left of the notification area are missing. I can pin a shortcut to the taskbar and it works immediately but doesn't remain on a reboot (though the shortcut still works on my start menu, with the keyboard shortcut I assigned to it and a desktop icon). The shortcuts are also in this folder.

.Helpful resources.General rules. Follow. Keep it civil and on topic. Hello Windows friends,I am having a strange and resilient problem with Windows (what's new??).Some (not all) of my taskbar icons are not showing up. I have several applications pinned to my taskbar.
28mm summicron. Most of them are showing up, but a few of them are not. There is a place on the taskbar where the application badge should be, but there is no icon in the place (shown in screen cap below). When I open one of the applications which aren't showing up, the space where the icon should be is selected / highlighted, but there is still no badge (seen in screen cap below). When right click (2-finger click on trackpad) on the space where the application icon should be, the name of the application is there, and it has the option for 'Pin to taskbar'. Nothing happens if I click on either of the options (I have to open the application from the start menu or by searching it).I have restarted by laptop several times. I updated windows. I ran 'sfc /scannow' and ' DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth' from Windows Command Prompt, as per reply to a post on the Microsoft support forum. Both completed successfully, but neither resolved the issue.
I ran the diagnostics, as suggested in that same post. I also restarted the Windows Explorer process. None of these steps has resolved the issue.Sometimes the applications whose icons do not show up change (at first it was Slack, then Spotify, now it is Hulu and MS Word). This seems to mainly happen when I connect to an external monitor. One time when I did this, all the application icons came back and stayed there for a couple of days, only to disappear again upon a restart. I am at a total loss for where to go from here, short of resetting the OS through MS DART.
I would really prefer not to do a reset for such a seemingly small issue.Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution outside of the step I have already taken? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Icons Not Showing On Taskbar Windows 10 Blank
Lately I've been having a problem where the applications don't show they're open. I know they are and they open fine, they just don't show the grey/transparent box around them indicating they are open.
Like in this picture:Pretty irritating. I'm not sure what I did to cause it, the only major changes that I've made to my computer are some basic mods to video games, and a couple of regedit's for icon arrows.I've looked for a forum / article on this and have yet to find one describing my issue. Have gone through the task bar properties and display settings, multitasking settings etc.Thank you for help in advance. Just popping in with a cause: I run four machines from behind a dual-head, four port KVM.

Because it’s a VGA KVM that doesn’t use active emulation (some of my systems throw hissy fits at active emulation for various reasons), the actual screen image can shift slightly at times as the monitors adapt to the different systems they connect to.This was one of those times. I thought I was going bonkers on my Win10 system, but no the desktop had shifted about 2 pixels to the left (my start bar is vertical along the left side), hiding those little white stripes that show you that a program is actually open when not actively focused on.
